Burn Out Series

This series was created with charcoal gathered from burned out sections of Manitoba forests, coloured chalk pastels, and watercolour on paper. Working with unconventional charred wood medium, versus traditionally store bought charcoal, brings an aspect of uncontrollable randomness to line, value tones, and mood of the work. These elements mimic aspects of forest fires, as well as reflecting upon humanity’s often destructive mark on natural environments. Through my artwork I seek to increase awareness of the natural world, our interconnectedness with it, and some of the ways we imprint upon it.
